Dabaang Movie Review

Film: DABANGG (U/A)
Cast:
Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Sood, Arbaaz Khan and others
Director:
Abhinav Singh Kashyap
Rating:
***1/2

For those who have missed watching the
masala films of directors like Manmohan Desai, rejoice!

DABANGG fills the void that has been created in the genre of masala films. Abhinav Kashyap would surely make Manmohan Desai smile. This movie is sure to make you laugh, celebrate and even make you whistle.

DABANGG is a must watch for all those who love to be entertained. It’s an all out
dhamakedaar masala remix of emotions which we had forgotten one film alone could deliver. DABANGG is definitely for the fearless- for those who love to have everything on one platter.

Most of us have watched movies like AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY, COOLIE, DHARAM VEER etc. and all most all of us have enjoyed them simply for the fact that they do have a cathartic effect on is. DABANGG does the same. It offers you a
bhel puri of action, romance, drama, and electrifying music.

The verdict: A must watch for all those who love to be entertained and all Salman fans.

Set in Laalgunj in Uttar Pradesh, DABANGG is the story of Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan), a fearless but corrupt police officer who follows unorthodox working methods. Chulbul has had a bitter childhood. His father passed away when he was very young, following which his mother (Dimple Kapadia) married Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna). They have a step son Makhanchan (Arbaaz Khan).

It is but natural that Prajapati favours Makhanchan. Chulbul cannot fathom this. He decides to take control of his own destiny and cuts off all relations with his step-father and half-brother. His sole attachment is with his mother. These- his inner demons of hatred and yet wanted to be accepted, forgiveness and kindness- are the base of DABANGG.

After his mother's demise, Chulbul is left with no one in his life. This is when Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha), enters his world. Her unique take on life and her bold attitude, turn Chulbul’s life upside down. Chulbul begins to have faith, he gathers a more positive approach to life… and he also realizes the value of a family.

Don’t worry; the fun is yet to begin! Every hero must have an enemy, and so does Chulbul. His rival is the dubious and cunning Cheddi Singh (Sonu Sood). He has his own plots brewing behind the scene. Cheddi Singh acts like a speed breaker, and puts one brother against the other. Makanchan (like most confused brothers) does something without realizing its consequences.

Will he be forgiven by Chulbul? Will they together manage to defeat all their adversaries and emerge victorious?

The plot may seem common, but believe me- the film shall grip you. No, it is not like a remake. More like repackaging. DABANGG is surely worth all your money!

What works for the film is definitely Salman Khan. This role is almost tailor made to suit his personality. His fans are in for a special treat.

The other things that definitely work for the film are: the stunts (S. Vijayan) and the music (Sajid Wajid and Lalit Pandit).

It would be a sacrilege if I did not speak about the action sequences. They are all outstanding. They will make you gasp, shriek and even cheer in end. Believe me, it shall be very difficult for you not to squirm in your seat and later jump up with joy. The climax shall act as a magnet for audiences and ensure that they come back again and again.

Many a time’s songs in an action flick seem out of place. But Sajid- Wajid have done a stupendous job at providing a melodious score that goes hand in hand with the rhythm of the movie. Tere Mast Mast Do Nainis sure to lift your spirits and Munni shall definitely make you want to dance.

Kudos to Abhinav Kashyap for making such a brilliant film. It is exciting and titillating. This one is surely going to ensure Abhinav’s name in the hall of fame. He has managed to balance out the flow of emotions. Mahesh Limaye’s cinematography is an icing on the cake. He has captured the quintessential moments and indeed rendered a rustic touch- one that adds to the flavor of the film. The editing of the film is perfect. Pranav Dhiwar has ensured that the film doesn’t drag. The dialogues, like the music, are bound to make you whistle.

This movie, literally provides the white, gray and black of human emotions. This, by far is Salman Khan’s best performance. The tag line for his character –
Robinhood Pandey: Cop, Lover Rebel, is indeed true. His pairing with Sonakshi Sinha is a stroke of genius. Sonakshi is sure to have a huge fan following after this film. Her acting skills are praiseworthy. She has honed her emotional expressions to perfection. This is precisely why her character is not over shadowed by the other actors in the film.

Arbaaz Khan has executed his part subtly but succinctly. He is the perfect foil to Salman’s character.

Sonu Sood is fantastic. He matches Salman’s acting prowess especially in the action scenes.

I surely do not need to mention that Malaika Arora Khan sizzles in the item number (Munni). Vinod Khanna and Dimple Kapadia are truly wonderful. I feel Anupam Kher and Tinnu Anand could have been given more footage. Mahi Gill is average.

DABANGG is sure to attract a huge audience- not only because the opening week has two major festivals, but also because it is indeed very attractive. It is definitely going to be a hit at the Box Office- in India and Overseas.

DABANGG is definitely a blockbuster!

Our Verdict:
